Difference Between Stage 1 and Stage 2 Baby Food?

What Is Stage 2 Baby Food?

Stage 1 baby food has a fragile consistency that will drip off the spoon with no clumps. Stage 2 baby food is roughly pureed, blended, and strained and contains a thicker, denser consistency, including small chunks for your baby to gum around.

Stage 2 also has more than one flavor so it explores taste and textures on a whole new level. The purpose of starting with stage 1 baby foods is so they learn to chew and swallow. But not only that it’s to check for allergic reactions by starting with one ingredient at a time.

Stage 2 Baby Food Age

Your baby is normally ready for stage 2 baby food between 6-8 months. Depending on how your baby is doing with stage 1, make sure they are accepting it from a spoon and swallowing it with no problem. Once they have it down you can move on to stage 2. The purpose of starting with stage 1 and then moving to stage 2 is to get your baby used to chewing and swallowing.

Every baby is different and there is once again no set-in-stone age when it’s time for your baby to start solid or move on to stage 2 of baby food.

Here is a stage chart I made below, it has the typical age they start that stage, the texture, example foods they can start eating, signs their ready to move on to the next stage, and the amount of formula/breast milk they should still be consuming while starting solids.

Please contact me and let me know if there are any mistakes you see in my chart or you have any questions. My email is thanks in advance!

You can also introduce them to oatmeal or quinoa. These are all rich in nutrients and fiber filled for your baby’s growth and development. With that being said, they also have different flavors for some including strawberry and banana. After they get used to the texture of rice cereal or oatmeal you can change the flavor to start getting them prepared for more flavor from purees.

Signs Your Baby Is Ready For Stage 2 Baby Food

You know your baby is ready to move on when they consistently take a spoon every time you offer it and not let the food dribble out of their mouths anymore. In addition, they are no longer pushing any food away with their tongues. Instead, they are accepting solids with no complications and are swallowing with no discomfort. Other clues are if they’re using their jaw and tongue to mash food and moving it from side to side.

Baby Solids Schedule

You should expect your baby to be eating three solid meals per day at six months of age. With each meal consisting of 2-4 ounces of pureed foods per sitting. With 6-8 ounces of formula/breastmilk 3-5 times daily. Most mothers give their babies a bottle before they start the solids because it’s still the most important part of their diet.

Your baby will not like all solid foods; my baby would not eat meat purees. She would make the goofiest faces when she didn’t want it and sounded like she was coughing in disgust.

It’s okay for your baby to turn down certain foods; your baby does not have to like everything. There are so many different choices of stage 2 baby food. You can try again with that flavor in a couple of days. Just because they don’t accept it the first time doesn’t mean they won’t retake it later. My daughter did start eating meat after the fourth attempt.

Stage 2 Baby Foods- Conclusion

I hope I have answered all your questions in this article. Furthermore, your baby will be ready at their own pace, but as long as their taking stage 1 baby foods down well, it is perfectly okay to move on to stage two. Some babies start stage two as soon as four months old. However, experts do not recommend this because their intestines still lack many digestive enzymes, and it is associated with excessive weight gain. It’s when they’re ready just look for the signs.
