Stage 4 Baby Food

What is stage 4 baby food? What is the stage 4 baby food age? If you’re looking this up, your baby is most likely now a toddler.

This article will discuss everything you need to know when moving on to stage 4 baby foods and what age they begin stage 4 baby foods. Then, I will discuss moving away from breastmilk/formula, and onto cow’s milk and the benefits, honey has to offer now that they are old enough.

Stage 4 Baby Food

What Is Stage 4 baby food?

Food that the rest of the family is eating (table foods).

At this point, you can feed your child anything. Just as long as it’s still soft and broken up into big enough pieces for them to grab but small enough, it’s not a choking hazard.

Let me make a quick joke; by anything, I do mean edible food. So please do not feed your child anything else.

What Is The Stage 4 Baby Food Age

It’s typical for babies to move on to stage 4 at 12 months old. At 1-year-old, this means your baby is no longer a baby but has entered into toddler years. However, this does not mean you can give your toddler a plate of food as you would yourself. Their meals still need to be cut up into bits big enough for them to grab but small enough not to be a choking hazard.

Your baby should have developed some teeth at this stage and can chew and break up food a little better than they could at stage 3. The average number of teeth a 12-month-old should have is 2-4. It is okay if your toddler does not have any teeth yet, some babies don’t get their first tooth till 15 months, and some babies have a tooth a birth. Therefore, there’s a wide range of when babies’ teeth will develop. If your baby does not have any teeth at this point, make sure what you are feeding them is softer.

I have placed a chart with the stages of baby food below. With this chart, it is easy to see the steps and their difference. If you notice any mistakes, please send me an email and let me know at I am human and make mistakes, and I’m new to blogging and design.

Messy Messy Toddlers

Toddler years are so much fun! But so messy; at this point, your toddler will be trying to hold a spoon and feeding themselves. They may not grab the spoon correctly, and that’s okay; they will learn. With that said, they will fling food all over. They will have it all over their face and hands, the floor, and even you.

“My daughter thought it was hilarious to drop all her food on the floor; she loved to watch me pick it up.” She also really enjoyed feeding the dogs. Often I would find spaghetti noodles on the dog’s back.

Make sure you have plenty of bibs. It seemed like the more extensive the mess my daughter was making, the happier she was.

“In the picture to the left, my daughter was in her walker in which she grabbed a bowl of fruit thawing off the counter.” She dumped it on her face, all down the front of her, and there were brightly colored berries all over my white carpet.”

I wish I had those suction cups for that “haha.”

I didn’t get upset; I thought it was amusing, making for a nice fun story.

Tips For Keeping The Disaster To A Minimum

  1. Use utensils that fit your toddler’s hands.
  2. Suction cups and bowels, so they cant pick it up and dump it on their face or the floor.
  3. Bibs that catch food, rather than it dripping off their face to their lap. I use to just put a bigger burp rag on her lap but she would end up moving it.

Of course, these tips are not a solve-all for your messy toddler, but they do help! I am adding a link to the best set of suction bowls, cups, and utensils easy to grip. I wish I had seen this when my daughter still needed them.

Variety Is The Key

At stages 2-3, you want to work on feeding your child a variety of different foods. The combination is essential for your child’s nutritional needs and helps prevent eating problems later in life. My Stage 3 Baby Food article talks about how my daughter had a sensitive gag reflex, and I didn’t start textured and clumpy solids until she was 11 months. The consequences I face now by not asking a doctor or doing research. I listened to friends and family who said, ” don’t worry about it, she will get there.”

Tips For Offering A Variety of Stage 4 Baby Food

  • Let your child choose a new fruit or vegetable, take them to a grocery store and have them point out what they want. It can be fresh pineapple, cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, etc. Your child is more likely to try it if they get to pick it out
  • Switch it up by adding different ingredients to the meals you are eating or make something new. For example, if you normally eat pepperoni pizza and they like pepperoni, try supreme or taco.
  • Try different types of cereal; they have a wide variety, and once again, let them pick it out.
  • Add different fruits to their oatmeal or cereal.

These tips work; I use them now with my 3-year daughter in the picky eaters club due to me starting stage 3 way too late in her life. I take her to the store with me every time and let her pick out fruits, snacks, cereal, yogurt, and meats. It has helped a lot!

Cows Milk Instead of Formula

At stage 4, you are ready to start introducing cow’s milk. In case of allergy, there is also almond milk or soy. Furthermore, there are also toddler formulas which I gave my daughter for a while because they were filling and still full of nutrition. Although I had many problems getting her to eat, I worried she wasn’t getting enough food or nourishment.

They have a variety of different formulas for toddlers; I used both toddler shakes and toddler-powered recipes. At this point, I still had my Baby Brezza, so the continuing of powder was no issue for me. But the shakes had different flavors that she liked and were easy to grab on the go.

If your baby doesn’t like the cow’s milk, you can add 1/2 cow’s milk and half formula/ breastmilk, lowering the amount of breastmilk/formula slowly until their officially weaned.

At this stage, your child can also have honey! I didn’t give her honey with my daughter because I don’t eat honey a lot. However, honey has a lot of beneficial purposes. For instance, it’s high in antioxidants and gives them lasting energy; it contains needed vitamins and minerals, helps protect their liver from damage, helps heal wounds faster. One thing I have used it for is cough medicine.

When my daughter was sick with RSV, I went to the store and bought a bunch of different cough medicines, praying I could get her to take one. But, nope, there was no way that child was taking it. So I had called the nurse to see what I could do to help improve her symptoms, and she told me to mix honey in with warm water.

It helps break down mucus and loosens the cough; research has shown that honey is better than store-bought cough medicine. I wish I had known this before I bought all that store-bought cough syrup.
